Mortisalian Saga #2

From The Shadows

Rate this book
Life has changed dramatically for Cassandra Collier. She’s accepted her role as the Princess of Mortisali. She’s more in love with Damon than she could have ever imagined, and she has a life she desperately wants to live. The only problem? That pesky little prophecy that follows her around like a shadow.

The pressure to speed her life along isn’t quite as bad as she’d anticipated, but the antiquated laws she has to live by make it impossible to take matters into her own hands, especially when the love of her life is a man bound by morals and honor.
When duty pulls her away from the palace and Damon, Cass finds herself ambushed by the veneficus.

Locked away by a formidable enemy and surrounded by stone and hopelessness, Cass has no escape other than retreating into her own head. The trouble is, she’s not the same girl who was held in an asylum by complacency. She’s a princess, the princess of Mortisali, and all it takes is a hint of light to emerge from the shadows for everything to change...

Two down, two to go and I cant wait to start book three, as I said in my review of Parallel I am new to any kind of Fantasy romance, but this series just blows your mind.

Where as book one pulls you into the fantasy world, this second book gives you more in depth information and secrets only a few people know, some of the secrets even the King had no idea of. The detail is so vivid it gets in your head and in your dreams, the amazing imagination that L. J Stock has is breath-taking, when you think it cant get any better your mind is blown again.

When Cass was captured and held in the dungeon, she learned more about herself and the powers that she held, with the right concentration she could do almost anything her mind wishes.

There are all the characters from book one in this book with a few added extras some you are suspicious of initially. You cant help but love Damon, the true definition of a Knight in shining Armour.

This series is one of those that you cant describe good enough in your review as much as you try, all I can say is read it for yourself, you wont be disappointed!

Wow! Just WOW! What a fantastic read.

I adored Parallel and I wasn't sure what/if anything could top it. oh boy was I ever wrong. This book is chock a block with edge of your seat action, thrilling suspense, and fair few swoon worthy adorable moments.

This book is a fabulously written roller coater of a story that I simultaneously couldn't read fast enough and never wanted it to end.

Mortisali is an amazing awe invoking world that I truly would love to dwell, under the protective forces of Vis Liberi of course :p

I am seriously in awe of this ladys ability to create a world so complex yet easily understood due to Stocks fantastically detailed narrative.
Oh to have a walk around inside her mind.

As well as the ones we already know and love From the Shadows introduces us to more characters that are so interesting and intriguing that you can't help but crave more!

I NEED more!!! I  cannot wait to get back to Mortisali!

If you've read my review for Parallel, book 1 in this incredible series, you'll know how much I love the whole plot line already. What blows me away with FTS is how L.J. Stock manages to switch up her imagination yet again. You think you've seen it all part one of her urban fantasy saga, but part 2 is even more original, with plot twists and surprise turns at every corner.

With the introduction of some new characters who you will love and hate in equal measure, L.J. Stock expands her Mortisalian world, giving it such richness and depth, it's hard to believe this kind of imagination exists in a human's mind. She. Is. A. Machine.

She's smashed it out of the park with FTS. I could wax lyrical and be all poetic as sh*t about this for you guys, but it won't do it justice. The sign of a good book is one that leaves you speechless. The sign of a good writer is one that leaves the reader feeling like they can't write a review worthy of the story they've just experienced.

All I can say is that you NEED to read this series. Even if it's not your usual genre, take a chance. You'll get swept up in the incredibly smooth writing, the vivid world that surrounds you, and you'll be rooting for Cass to make it through another challenge that seems impossible to get out of alive.

L.J. Stock...

GET ME BOOK 3! STAT!

Five EPIC stars.

From the Shadows is the continuation of Parallel so you MUST read that book before this one.
Now that's out of the way, let's get to what I thought of the book. I loved this one more than the first. Cass is really stepping in to her new role and accepting it with grace and a fierceness that makes her an awesome female lead. The story is one that seemed complicated at first, but as it unfolds you get sucked in and you fall in love even more with this world that LJ created. It's mystical, magical, full of action and twists and turns that will have you catching your breath. Couple all this with an underlying romance that is just enough to sooth a romance lovers soul, but not enough to over power the story and it's easy to see why From the Shadows is one of my favorites.
When an author can take me from my comfort zone of primarily reading romance, and have me fall head over heels for another genre, that speaks volumes. LJ Stock has a gift, and it's one that transcends genre.

L.J. Stock's "From the Shadows" is the second tale in the Mortisalian Saga. This again is a very detailed fantasy with a sweet romance embedded in it. Grigori is an interesting new development. I can't wait to see what happens with him in the future. I guess we'll have to wait to see who we can trust! I just love this series - it would make a great TV series. I can't wait to read #3!

On Vacay, LOL, gotta scoot but will say this. Ms. Stock is a brilliant writer with a vibrant and ultra creative mind and I loved this mind trip into madness. She is quickly becoming one of my fav writers which probably means anything for I am just an egg head MD and have no credentials to review a novel simply because I read it. BUT, great novel, great writer and LOL as most writers probably insane. Will read more of her, bet your bottom dollar on that. BEST Dr. Amanda.

My oh my....

Where do I begin?

Cassandra, having accepted her responsibility as the princess of Mortisali, continues to strive to meet the expectations set for her. Having settled into her new life and still so beautifully in love with Damon, Cassandra's life seems almost prefect.

Almost.

Maybe.

Well, that is until Cass—along with her trusty guardsman—are ambushed during one of her duties as the princess that had unfortunately sent her away from the palace.

Hours, days and weeks have passed, and Cassandra can see no way out, living her days in a dungeon with the hopes of one day escaping at the forefront of her mind.

Weak and hungry, Cass must decide whether she can trust the man who has held her captive for so long, forcing her away from Damon, the love of her life and everything she loved.

Will Cass escape? And if so, will she forever be tainted by the prophecy that has been mapped out for her since before she was even born?

"I achingly wished for open skies and rolling hills, almost as much as I longed for Damon's arms."

"As aggressive and as masculine as he was, Grigori had a softer side to him when he was with me. I found myself looking past parentage and what he was choosing instead to accept him for the person he was beyond his uncontrollable faults."

Relationships are tested and trust is of very little quantities now that the prophecy has been voiced.

Trust no one, but stay loyal.

LJ brought us Parallel. The perfect world that we all crave so much. The one we all want to escape to because, let's face it, sometimes reality sucks and we all want to find solace in another world.

Like Parallel, I found myself beautifully thrown back into that world, never wanting to escape. LJ's words flow like magic, capturing you with every word, page and chapter. I adored book 1 in this series and was eagerly anticipating book 2. I have to say that I wasn't disappointed. Again, I was left wanting more.

I won't give too much away. Just know that this story continues.. Long after we're shouting at the author for more. Because... Hello? Damon?... Cassandra?... Not to mention Grigori... Shannon.. (Who is super hilarious, might I add)

Seriously, guys. I won't go into this too much because I want you all to see for yourself, but what I will say is that Grigori one to watch out for. One that you don't want to miss out on. My heart aches for him... My love blossomed for him and although you didn't want to.. You couldn't help but root for him in some way.

I have no doubt that the third book (which I'm hopeful for) will be equally—if not greater—than the second one.

Her words are poetic, captivating and truly stunning.

Mortisali will always be my happy place.

Thank you LJ for giving us another piece of Motisalian Magic 😍

This is the second book in this series and it begins about 6 months after the first one ends. Cass has accepted her place as princess and her part in the prophecy. Which was easier once they learned that Damon was her other half in the prophecy. Now they can try and begin the next part of their life. There are still things that need to come to light. Not all of them will be easy to handle and some they won’t learn about until after they happen. Bound by archaic laws and in love with a man with morals and honor stop Cass from doing everything she wants. They will all be put to the test. This book had me hooked from the beginning. I am pulling for Cass and Damon so much. Their life isn’t always easy because of the prophecy hanging over their heads. It seems as though there will never be a time when Cass and Damon can just be with each other or get married. They are all always looking over their shoulders for when they will get attacked again. I can’t wait to find out what happens in the next book. I need it now. I will definitely be looking for more books in this series and by L.J. Stock.
I was given this book in return for an honest review.

From the Shadows is the second instalment in the Mortisalian Saga and it is a welcome return to the land of Mortisali. Cass is as kick-ass as ever, Damon is as droolworthy as ever, and the rest of the relationships continue to delight. So what is new? Well, what is new is that Cass and Rasmus get kidnapped, there is a new nymph in town, plus a bad guy that is actually a good guy who pretends to be bad! Got that?

I adore L.J. Stock's way of writing! It is descriptive without being over the top. It is emotion-inducing whatever the emotion is supposed to be. There is a smooth rhythm to her writing that lulls you in, before your stomach drops down in reaction to something that has happened. I love it!

It does end on a cliffhanger, so I will be waiting for book 3 with enthusiasm. If you like Fantasy, you will LOVE this. Definitely recommended by me.

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and my comments here are my honest opinion. *

I love this book, these characters and this world! I don't think I even have the right words to express my feelings. I was so excited to have an advanced copy of this book. It definitely didn't let me down! The first couple of chapters were catching up on Cass's new life as a princess and a refresher for what happened in book one. By chapter three I was thrown in the action and drama of an ambush and Cass's capture and captivity by bad guys. This story flowed beautifully and was extremely well written. I could picture the characters and scenes as if I was there. I could feel the emotions of the characters in every word written. LJ Stock is an amazing author with an absolute gift for painting a scene and drawing my feelings to the surface. I adore Cass and Damon, and Mortisali so so much! I do hope there is a book three so I can walk in Mortisali again!

Ah, Mortisali... how do I love thee? Let me count the ways!

LJ Stock is back with another stunning chapter in the lives of all my favourite Mortisalians, and make no mistake. This time it's bigger, better, and even more heart destroying than before. Who even knew that was possible?

Once again, as we've come to expect of this author, we are taken on a whirlwind adventure, filled with danger, excitement, poignant moments of intense emotion, and that brilliant witty banter that is a hallmark of LJ's writing. All our favourite characters are back, with a few new ones. I won't spoil anything by telling you who, but this book contains my ultimate, all time, absolute favourite book boyfriend, but you can't have him. He's mine!

There is a subtle beauty to the way these books are written. LJ doesn't over explain or patronise her readers. She believes in their ability to identify and empathise with her characters enough to leave some things to the imagination. She writes boldly, leaving shades of grey in every character--good or bad. That understanding of human nature and the fact that nobody is perfect is, for me, what takes these books to a whole new level. Not a single person amongst the characters is perfect. Even the good guys mess up and do things that make you cringe, no matter how honourable their intentions. But it's those intentions and the intensely likeable way that LJ writes them that keeps you rooting for them throughout the story.

These books are epic fantasy stories set in a different world, a world I have begun to slip into the moment I open the pages and never want to leave. She describes Mortisali with such reverence and love that it's not hard to tell that it's her happy place just as much as it becomes yours as you read. Every scene is written with intensely enviable skill. You feel constantly safe in the knowledge that every page you turn will contain more of the same stunningly written prose and sharply witty banter. You can see how green the trees are, how blue the sky is. You can taste how fresh the air is because the writing wills you to. You see it all and more through Cassandra's eyes.

I think I touched on my love of Cass in my review for Parallel, but I think it bears repeating what an amazing female role model she is. She's a kick ass female who takes no crap from anybody. She's not afraid to stand up for herself and for those she cares about. In this book, we see her standing up against almost everybody she loves on behalf of somebody who, at that time, cannot do so for themselves. I'm trying to keep this review spoiler free so all I will say is that that moment sealed her for me as my favourite all time literary heroine.

This book takes us darker and deeper into the murky world that Thanatos wants to create, giving us more of a hint of what could happen if he were to win the impending war. We find out more of the depths he is willing to sink to in order to seize the power he so desperately craves. This book is darker than the last, but even in the midst of desperate situations where there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel, the characters keep on going, and every situation is infused with that warmth of friendship and love that is so typical of Miss Stock's writing.

Parallel was my favourite book of 2016, and so far, From the Shadows is blasting the rest of 2017 away! I can't wait for more from Mortisali!

From the Shadows is Book Two in the Mortisalian Series. I totally loved book One (Parallel). The characters, the unique storyline, everything was perfect. I thought, how could Book Two live up to that? Not only did Book 2 live up to book 1, it totally blew me away.

I started reading From the Shadows as soon as I got it and was immediately engulfed right back into the story as if no time had passed between book 1 and book 2. All the emotions that I felt from book one, came right back after the first paragraph. The author writes in such a way, I got so involved in the story, that I half expected one of the characters to ask me to step up and help.

The characters are so well written that I felt like I was right there in the story with them going through all the ups and downs alongside them. This book had my heart racing at times (you can tell because I have several nails that I completely bit down while reading certain sections.), but also had me feeling the anxiety, love, complete despair, anger, joy, and every other emotion the author brought the characters through.

The Mortisalian Series is unlike any story I have ever read. Not only is the plot line totally unique, the characters are alive. If you get anything out of this review, I hope it is – READ THIS BOOK! ☺

Just when I thought nothing could top that first book, L.J. Stock comes out with this second book and blows all those thoughts away. I absolutely love the addition of Greek mythology and just how detailed these books are. So detailed that it’s like it’s all playing out in my head which I LOVE.

From the Shadows continues just where we left off in the first book, with Cass and Damon FINALLY together and all seemingly going well until Cass goes on an expedition with just her guard to a village in efforts to improve these people’s quality of life. What they didn’t count on though, was being ambushed by Thanatos’ men and being captured. Alone in a dungeon miles beneath the Earth we find Ras and Cass without options of getting back home until they are surprisingly helped by one of the guards and his aunt. When all seems lost, meaning the other guards figured out the plan to escape.. a fight breaks out leaving them all hurt and so close to not making it out alive.

When they finally get home, a plan is formed to capture the enemy and move palaces only for everything to go up in flames AGAIN might I add but Cass is reunited with the whole of her family in Mortisali which makes it all the better.

There is so much going on in this book, literally so much action that I just couldn’t cope for a second there. I adore this series so much and can’t wait to dive right into Dishonored!

From the Shadows is the 2nd book in the Mortisalian Saga. Thank you again for giving us a glossary with who’s who.

Cassandra Collier is now Princess of Mortisali and she is in love with Damon.

Cass is leaving Mortisali and will be gone for a while. She feels she has an obligation to test a theory she has been working on. Damon doesn’t want her to go and feels that she will be risking her life and he can’t go with her.

She and Rasmus (her personal guard) are captured by the Venificus (Thànatos’ personal soldiers). They fought valiantly but to no avail.

Their only hope was to be rescued or they could translocate but, that couldn’t happen without water.

I had a harder time with book one Parallel but, I think that was because this is a complicated story that needed to be set up. I enjoyed reading this book and I relied heavily on the glossary to remind me of who is who. I give From The Shadows 4.5 stars.

Cassandra carries on even when hopelessness prevails. Damon is bound by honor, tradition, and his commitment to duty. He loves Cass and is determined to seek her captors and free her. With a prophecy unfulfilled and bearing down on her shoulders Cass must stay strong regardless of her status as princess.
Will she return from the shadows to fulfill her duty or will the enemy reign while all is lost?
Read From the Shadows to seek the truth! Cannot wait for the next book in the Mortisali world.

L.J. Stock the things you do to me!!! From The Shadows takes place a few months after the last book ended. Cass has accepted her role as Princess and her part in the prophecy. She very much is in love with Damon and has learned that he was her other half in the prophecy. She is still learning things so much and it isn't always easy to handle.

This book sucked me right back in and L.J. Stock absolutely wrote this flawlessly. The story, the characters, all of it is just absolutely fantastic!
