Cassandra Collier was only seventeen when her parents dumped her in a psychiatric ward. Seven years later, she still has no hope of leaving. Nothing’s changed. She still hears sounds that can’t possibly be real - sounds of war and brutal deaths that she can’t turn off. At least, not since his voice was silenced in her mind.

After a threat to her life becomes very real, Cassandra is torn from the only world she’s ever known and thrust into the very reality and truth that have been hidden from her since she was born, including the prophecy that is her birthright.

Unsure whether she has the strength to be the woman she needs to be, and more than aware that her decision controls the fate of a world that doesn’t know she exists, Cassandra has to choose between the love of a man who barely registers her existence and loyalty to a father she barely knows.

Parallel, the latest piece of brilliance from the mind of L.J. Stock, is a novel that you won't want to put down. So if you plan to pick up a copy, don't expect to get anything done until you've finished. The hangover I've been nursing since I finished reading it is of the epic variety.

There is almost nothing that this book doesn't have: wonderful, well rounded and interesting characters, snappy dialogue, a world you will never want to leave, forbidden love that you just can't help pulling for, (no matter how much you want to save the world), and a bad guy you can really get your teeth into hating.

It has all of this and so much more.

I've always wondered when reading certain fantasy novels, how so much can come from the mind of one person, and here is another that will always blow me away. In Mortisali, L.J. Stock has created an entire world, complete with history and customs. The mythology is well researched and cleverly used for the purposes of the story. And the descriptions of the world you step into are so rich and diverse that you will truly believe that you've left the real world and stepped right into the pages with Cass and the gang.

But what good is a magical land that you want to visit, without characters you want to hang out with? Well, fear not because Parallel is littered with fantastic people whose lives you become so ensconced in that it becomes a challenge to remember to do anything but keep turning pages.

Cassandra Collier is one of the best written, well rounded female characters I have ever had the privilege to read about. She hasn't had an easy life, yet she's retained her feisty kick ass attitude and a formidable sense of humour. She loves hard and makes no apology for who she is, and quite rightly so. In Cassandra, L.J. has created a female character that any woman can identify with on some level and all young girls can look up to. We are living in a world that increasingly seems to put image and possessions above all else. Cass is a breath of fresh air, who cares little for how she looks in favour of the, to me, far more admirable qualities of courage, loyalty, self sacrifice and above all else, love. With the bonds of friendship and love that she develops seamlessly throughout the story, her resolve to do what must be done grows and grows, keeping you on the edge of your seat as you watch her developing into a formidable woman you will want to emulate.

In order to avoid spoilers, I won't comment too much on the other characters in the story, but I will say that each and every one of them is well written, with individual quirks, and sharp tongues that will have you laughing one minute and crying the next. L.J's ability to create characters that you just can't help wanting to hang out with is becoming legendary. Damon, Alexa, Zander, Rasmus, Acantha, Melody, and many more, you will desperately want to go to Mortisali just so that you can be best friend to all of them.

The story itself is compelling and brilliant. You are already so invested in both the world and the characters by the time the story revs up to its climax that you find yourself lost in the moment, gasping, sobbing and wielding imaginary swords as you read. There were times during my first read when I looked up and was surprised to find that I wasn't in Mortisali after all. THAT is a formidable skill for a writer and one that L.J. has in spades. Because make no mistake, Mortisali is an amazing place that I wish existed in the real world, but, like any good magical land, it also has a bad guy who gives Voldemort a run for his money. You will love to hate him and his band of followers and, like me, you will find yourself wanting to bang down L.J's door so you can fall to your knees and beg for the next instalment.

I cannot effuse enough about my enjoyment of this book and my love for Cass and the gang. This is L.J's masterpiece. Just like Narnia, Hogwarts, Middle Earth, or any of the magical lands we've all visited a thousand times in our imaginations, Mortisali is somewhere we will want to go back to time and time again.

OK so I don't read fantasy romance, or I didn't till I read this book!

I don't cry at books, but I find every book that I read from Lou brings tears to my eyes, the description, the detail, the everything that you read in her books overwhelm you, you are not reading the book but you are part of it from the start till the end.

I admit I struggled at first with this book, but the more I read the deeper it pulled me in, I felt that I was seeing it all through Cass's eyes, feeling her fear, her love and her determination to be who she was born to be, and the more I read it the more I loved it.

The love that Cass has for Damon you feel it before she knows it, he is her protector but also her soul mate.

there is no end to this ladies talent, her word and imagination is second to none.

This is a must read, I am ready for the second book now

Day 1 WOW was the first word I said when I finished the book.I had nothing else that would make sense after the amazing book I had just read.
Day 2 I was in a complete Parallel haze all day at work and couldn't stop thinking about these characters and what they were doing.
DAY 3 My dreams I woke up from,I was in Mortisali.
I want to be in Mortisali with these characters. And I was with the way LJ Stock wrote this book.
I didn't want this story to ever end,I slowed down my reading in the last 20% hopping it wouldn't.So happy that there will be more books to dive back into.
What can I say but read this book, fall in love with story, fall in love with characters, and fall in love with this authors beautiful out of this world book.
I'm ready book 2 when you're ready,Miss Stock.;)

Simply said Brilliant, futuristic writing, imagination and critical thinking, genius novel by a genius. L.J never leaves me in a lurch, she always leaves egg head me wanting more and in this torrid novel she answers all the bells and whistles with a remarkable novel. Ty L.J. you are making my summer reading such a delight, in between surfing and beach volley ball I needed to heal from Medical schools. Just think, I click on Amazon and they send me a miracle, how lucky am I? TY Dr. Amanda.

This dragged on for me. It took me more than 5 days to read this book which is FOREVER compared to how long it usually takes me to read a book. I understand that the world building had to take place but this dragged on for sooooo long it was just boring.

It was also a bit too YA/NA (this book felt more YA at times even though the heroine is in her mid-twenties) for me. I am undecided as to whether I will read the next book or not. The main reason is that things finally started to move in the last 4 - 5 chapters so maybe things could pick up but then the epilogue happened and it was blah again.

I will admit that it took me a bit to get into this book. But about half way through the book a was totally hooked. This book is about a girl names Cassandra. She has lived a life that is pretty bad so far. She is currently lives in a mental institution thanks to her father. She has heard these noises and sounds her whole life but has no clue if that means she is crazy or not. Sometimes she even sees the things she hears. But her whole life is about to change and she about to learn about her true destiny. I felt for Cass so much especially in the beginning. Living a in physic ward and unable to leave even when she turned 18. Her father has only ever told her about how much he doesn’t like or want her. Her mother never really defended her. Her brother was there for her as well as a boy named Damon but she lost him many years ago. She doesn’t know what happened to him just that she didn’t see or hear him anymore. After an incident in the physic ward she wakes realizing she is in a moving car with her nurse Alexa and someone else. Almost her whole life has been a lie. She about to learn about that some of the things that you only read about in books are real and that she is part of something much bigger than herself. People she thought were gone are back and more things than she can ever imagine. I can’t wait to read the next book and see where the story takes them next. I am completely sucked in now and have to know what happens to all the characters. I highly recommend this book/series if you like paranormal/mystery books.
I was given this book in return for an honest review.

Parallel is the first book in the Mortisalian Saga, telling the story of Cass who is in a Psychiatric Hospital for what looks like the rest of her life. Cass hears noises when water is nearby, horrific sounds of war and people in torment. She has made the best of her life, but things are about to happen that change all that she has known, and all those she thought she could count on.

WOW! This is an amazing #Fantasy #Romance that is so much more! It is full of action, elements, danger, and yes, a dash of romance too. Cass is a brilliant character who is not always full of rainbow sparkles, but has lived through some amazing times. She readily admits to whinging at times, but can also be counted on to dig deep when it matters. She is prepared to make sacrifices to her own happiness, for the lives of others. This is not meant to be sappy in anyway, but a mere statement of truth. I wasn't even halfway through this book when I was wiping at my eyes due to them leaking!

Excellently written, with no editing or grammatical errors to disrupt the reading flow, this is a fast-paced story that is everything you could ask for. I highly recommend this book, and can't wait for book 2, From The Shadows.

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and my comments here are my honest opinion. *

Rooted in Greek mythology, this novel tells the story of Cassandra a water/fire nymph who’d spent her whole live being mentally tortured at the hands of a man whom she believed to be her father. Culminating in his sending her away to a mental asylum, Cassandra spends years believing herself to be crazy after having a supposed imaginary friend Damon in her early years, hearing screams of battle whenever she would step into water and finally an attempt on her own life. One night changes everything for Cass, after being rescued from the asylum from two people claiming to be her guards, our heroine is spirited away to a grandmother’s house whom she never knew existed where she finds out who she really is and that her “imaginary friend” wasn’t imaginary after all. Soon after that her world is turned around even more when she finds out that she is the daughter of the king, making her a princess and one half of a prophecy detailing the end of the big baddy Thanatos, a man set on destroying everything good in this other dimension Mortisali.

Learning that her future daughter would bring about the end to this evil, leaves Cass just a bit blindsided but when we learn who her other half is (after a huge horrible battle might I add), we are left with the hope that good may just triumph over evil in this magical land.

Parallel (Mortisalian Saga Book 1) by L. J. Stock is the story of Cassandra a young lady who for the past 7 years has lived in a mental hospital. Since she was a little girl she has been hearing not only voices but a war plus she has an imaginary friend. She has had a hard life not only has she had to endure the noise and voices but a father that was mentally and emotionally abusive. Cassandra has gotten used to living in the hospital and is making the best of the situation until one night changes everything in her world. Cassandra learns that she is not crazy nor has she ever been crazy and the voices she hears are alternate universe. She know embarks on a journey of coming to terms with the alternate world. Everything she knew or believed has now been shattered and she now has to learn her place in this new world and how she fits into that world. I truly enjoyed this book. The premise of the story was interesting and that was the reason I wanted to read this book. The story was more than I could have hoped for. I do not read many book about this subject matter but I was taken on mythological journey in which I can’t wait to read the next installment. I was given a copy of this book for an honest review. I give this story 4.5 stars

Drama, mystery, romance, parallel universe what else does a book need. This book had a little of everything to keep you bound to the pages. Everyone is different in life but Cassandra thought something was very different about her, her whole life she wonders if there was something wrong with her. This book was a page turner from beginning till the end. Damon was one of those characters that will draw you in and just when you want to slap him you start to love him.
Cassandra has been through a lot in her lifetime but has she finally found her place where she belongs, but with belonging can she handle the responsibilities that comes along with her new world has handed to her or will it just lead to more heartbreak. This story is very different from what I would usual read, yet it manages to capture my attention and hold it till the end. L.J. Stocks draws you into the Parallel world where much is possible and all is left to the reader’s imagination.
Parallel leaves you ready and waiting for the next book before you are even done. I can’t wait to explore more of Cassandras home and her relationship with Damon and her new family. This book will take you on a ride so hold on tight and enjoy like I did.

Parallel is the first book I have read by this author as well as the first book in the Mortisalian Saga. Cass was put into a mental facility by her parents at the age of 17. The book begins 7 years later with her still in the same hospital. She hears and see things, mostly war, through water. A nurse is dragging her through the hospital to the shower. What follows is a fantastical story filled with tales of the gods, mythical beings, other realms, battles and so much more. The story is extremely well written and flows beautifully. I loved the characters so much. I love how important each and every character is. None of them were tossed aside and forgotten. The importance may be that someone is a friend or a helper, and they may only be in bits of the book but the author made them unforgettable. There is a love story here but the main focus is the actual story itself. I think Saga is definitely a wonderful word to use for this series. Parallel is an amazing read that pulled at my heart, had me laughing, and at times cursing the stubborn characters. This is a beautiful read full of hope. I am so excited to read book two!

Parallel was an incredible story filled with action, angst, tough decisions, heartbreak, and romance. I fell in love with the characters and the world they live in. This book was one that I took my time reading as I became immersed in the world of Mortisali. Once there I did not want to leave.

The characters were well defined and various important ones were introduced throughout the story. The author did a great job developing each of them. With the amount of important characters, it could have easily become confusing for the reader but since the author brought each character to life, it was very easy to distinguish each of them and which roles they played.

I loved the uniqueness of this story. The form of travel, the customs of Mortisali, the explanations as to why Cass had the experiences that she did, all brought great depth to this story.

This is book 1 in a series and I am so excited to see where this story goes from here. There are so many possibilities, I can’t wait to find out what awaits Cass as she moves forward down the path she has chosen.

Parallel is the first book in the Mortisalian Saga and holy smokes it was absolutely everything I wanted and never knew I needed!

This is the story of Cass who is in a Psychiatric Hospital. This book started off and I absolutely swore there was zero way she would ever leave this place. She hears noises and can see things when water is nearby. She's about to be thrown for a loop in this story when everything she knows and thinks she knows changes.

This series is absolutely amazing. Parallel kept me turning the pages as fast as I could because I wanted to know everything I could about why Cass hears things the way she does and what the water has to do with it. This is a fast paced, action packed read, and she has been through so much. This was also an emotional read. I didn't expect to need a Kleenex during this read and I absolutely had some moments where I ugly cried.

This was so well written and if you're looking for a read that hooks you from page one, this is it!

LJ Stock you are an absolute GENIUS!!

To discover a novel that tugs and pulls you in from the very first page is tough. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, you cherish every moment of every page, each chapter and full stop..
L.J has a magnificent eye for detail and her creative mind knows no bounds.
Through every turn of the page I found myself engrossed, living the story through Cass' eyes as well as my own. I found myself running barefoot through plush fields, I swam in the bluest of rivers and I watched the sun rise and fall whilst propped against a luscious, thick tree stump.
I was in Mortasali.
I still am.
The only thing that kept me sane whilst turning that very last page was knowing that my adventure in Mortasali was not over.
It was just the beginning.
The beginning of a wonderful, well thought out journey that has stayed with me since turning that final page.
Thank you L.J, for sharing your mind with us and showing us a world far beyond our imagination.

A 5* must read!!

I originally got Parallel as an ARC getting ready for the new release of Dishonored but I also found this book on Kindle Unlimited so why not let the author get a little something for the book. Parallel is the is the first book in the Mortisalian Saga.

Cassandra “Cass” Collier has been living in a mental hospital for the last 7 years. She has been hearing voices since she was a child. Cassandra’s life has been threatened and now she finds out that she isn’t crazy and never has been crazy.

Cass accepts her birthright and knows whom she will marry by the end of this fantasy. I will admit I am hooked and need to know the rest of the story! Fortunately for me I have From The Shadows ready for me to finish this review and to get started.

This is a complicated world of fantasy & mythology. I did find I needed to use the glossary to try and keep up with this book.

L.J. Stock's "Parallel" is the amazing first tale in the Mortisalian Saga. I don't give out many straight 5-star reviews, so believe me when I say this book is awesome! It's a new adult fantasy romance. Sweet and powerful. The writing and descriptions are very intense. I love the mythology with the four elements and the translocation. All the makings for an amazing series. I can't wait to read #2 and I've already added more from this author to my TBR list!

The cover art is phenomenonal!!  I must be honest and say that, that  is what drew me in, in the first place!

Cassandra had a hard childhood in the sense that her parents were detached emotionally and the fact that she was different didn't help much. I fell in love with her as a child already especially with the relationship she shared with Damon

I agreed to read this ARC for an honest review.

Thank you for dropping me into this realm that teeters between what we assume and what we cannot deny. LJ Stock takes you into a fantasy of past and present, prophecy and fate, only to leave you guessing, hoping, and writhing to you last word. A must read tale for all who love fantasy romance.

The intricacies of the world L.J Stock has created in this mythological world is one that has been painted in words by a true artist. This book was a little harder to get into because of this but absolutely 100% worth it. I can not wait to see where this series goes.

I love this series. What a creative idea to have two parallel dimensions , existing in different time periods with characters moving between the two. Well developed plot and characters. If you like the Cilmari series, you'll find this even better.
